BIG BANG THINKING
Big Bang Thinking is devoted to solving problems for all the projects in the World Academy. Our ultimate goal is to develop and use the creative minds in solving world problems related to social injustices, gender equality and human rights. Using the skills of brainstorming, pre-planning, potential problem analysis, and after action review, we select the best ideas for being creative, practical, visionary and getting the best results.
This project has been working with Literacy Reading project to collect more books for children and reach out more families to participate in the project activities. They also work with the Warm Hearts project to figure out how to collect more second- hand clothes and send them to the rural areas for children so they can attend school in the winter. Sharing Big Bang ideas with the other project leaders and members brings about more passion, inspiration, creativity and innovation. It also promotes teamwork.
This project holds meetings every two weeks, 20 volunteers and 17 projects members participated during the past semester, and helped to solve problems for 5 projects.
The Nourishing Life is committed to helping eradicate extreme poverty and hunger. Poverty and hunger are basic and critical problems in China, and the elderly and childrens are the most vulnerable among the entire population.
The project team, through the publicity campaign are raising awareness about these particular groups of people. Then we raise funds to provide free lunch for students in remote areas of Henan province, and to help the elderly who live in the poor areas and Chinese mountain school students.
In the second half of 2016, the project team raised funds in two ways: through donations from SIAS students and faculty, and from local restaurants who encourage their customers to contribute to the free lunch. Thanks to this funding, nearly 2,450 warm lunches have been provided for children in the mountainous area at a cost of 4 yuan for each lunch!
Green SIAS addresses environmental sustainability. The project educates students, faculty and the local community members about environmental issues; with the philosophy that starting locally contributes to a global perspective for creating sustainability. Our goals are to improve students’ awareness of the environment at SIAS University, and to be a strong voice to the world, such as conserving water, electricity and disposable items including plastic bags, bottles, and boxes.
Green SIAS has three awareness activities. The Green Pledge, encouraged college students to take better care of our world by signing a pledge to take action to protect the environment; The Green Sticker, we offered green stickers to the students who bring us plastic bottles to recycle, so “Green” will be seen throughout the campus. The last activity, Earth Hour, a worldwide activity, encourages students to turn off the lights during a specifically designated time so that we can save energy and reduce our carbon footprint.
Because we are committed to being a voice to the world, we use social media to challenge other college students to participate in these important activities to recycle and conserve.
There were 30 volunteers and 145 students joining our activities. We collected about 120 Military training uniforms for the Warm Hearts project. They then gave these to SIAS workers who needed clothing. Earth Hour also encouraged more than 30000 SIAS students to save energy.
HIV/AIDS Awareness focuses on eradicating HIV/AIDS. The project creates awareness for the public to learn and understand about HIV/AIDS. The team strives to educate about prejudice by helping children with at least one parent who is HIV infected or has died of HIV/AIDS. We develop confidence and personal power by Volun-Online Program. A program that connects World Academy members with a group of HIV/AIDS infected children to help them with their education. We partner with Chi Heng Foundation, a community charity, which has helped more than 20,000 children with education and job skills.
The goal of this project is to promote education and understanding of the impact of HIV/AIDS in Henan Province. It is critical for college age students to understand this issue, as people under the age of 25 accounts for half of all new HIV/AIDS infections each year worldwide.
In the second semester, we held the main activities of the video classroom, the World AIDS Day activities, Small Starfish Tour. Through the weekly video classroom, we helped 60 students in Shangcai County the Third School to learn about the character, culture and other knowledge for eight grade students. Shangcai County has the most HIV/AIDS infected people in China. The World AIDS Day, we worked with the SIAS school clinic to explain to all students about AIDS related knowledge. The Small Starfish SIAS trip is our cooperation with the Chi Heng Foundation activities. We brought 20 children affected by AIDS to visit SIAS University campus.

Give Voice to Women members interview the WAFW facilitators and invite them to share their unique personal and professional experiences. We report this information on the WAFW website. We also record the extraordinary experiences of these ordinary women and publish them on our social media.

We invite women from all walks of life and different backgrounds to participate in our annual Women’s Symposium and share their experiences.
In the second half of 2016，we held nurse interviews. Eight students from different grades interviewed the professional nurses. We posted the interviews on the internet and more than 400 people read the postings.
These activities inspire and encourage women to find their voice and make choice in their lives.
The Literacy Project focuses on achieving the UN goal of primary education for all children. This reading program is designed to encourage parents to read to, and with, their children on a regular basis. Each week our reading activities are held both on and off campus. Team members demonstrate to parents how to read to their children, which stimulates language development and learning. When children love reading, and parents encourage good reading habits, it furthers learning and helps both the parent and child recognize the value of education. Books are provided by the Literacy Project and from volunteers.
During the 2016-2017 Academy year the Literacy Project held 9 weekly reading programs on Sias campus and cooperated with Xinzheng Library to support the families in the community. In addition, we worked with Foxconn, a factory with 400,000 employees. The program brings Foxconn mothers and children together to read and enjoy learning twice a month. Sixty volunteers and more than 100 families were involved in this project during the past year.

The Sunshine Angels Project aims to promote the educational and social development of children with disabilities. We cooperate with Xinzheng Special Education School, where students are 8-15 years old. There are 12 deaf and 60 mentally challenged children at the school. Each Wednesday Academy members go to the school and conduct a project with the children. Each year a seminar, Special Education Experiences & Opportunities, is organized for teachers, professors and parents, which focuses on brain development and teaching pedagogy. The purpose is to provide an opportunity to exchange experiences and gain partnerships in learning how to integrate special needs children into society and communities. The students’ artwork designs were used on postcards and sold on Sias campus and in the community to publicize the project and to encourage more people to become aware of these children and their abilities.
Last semester, we visited the special school 12 times. In December, a delegation of five students and their school principle came to visit the World Academy from the Singapore American School and joined the Sunshine Angel Project. They visited the classrooms, experienced the daily life and had lunch with the students. One hundred volunteers joined in the project with us.

ONE TO ONE
The One to One project is dedicated to matching project members with children who have been left-behind in their villages with grandparents or in a residential when their parents have left their villages to work in other cities or provinces. Activities included online and on site activities. World Academy members visit the school once a month with different themes. Volunteers interact with children, and build a bond with the children, broaden their horizons and increase their experiences. These children usually do not see their parents more than once or twice a year and One to One builds a relationship to lessen the loneliness they feel.
Online activities are arranged between volunteers and left-behind children who are matched to develop a friendship. Volunteers and left-behind children communicate with each other through cell phones. Each week in a different topic of discussion, or to resolve problems in life and learning. Volunteers are assigned to guide them as their mentor and friends.
This project was begun by a World Academy member who was left behind when his parents went to the city to work. He experienced the loneliness of being without his parents and established this project to help other children. There are more than 61 million left-behind children in China, the majority are in Henan province. The project added a second village during the 2017 spring semester to include a village where nearly all parents have gone to a western province to work on date farms.
